Large Wingback Chair Slipcover: Measure Before Fitting

News Article 1650

Why can’t you just look at the wingback chair “large”

When purchasing a large wingback chair slipcover, the most common deviation is treating “large” as a fixed specification. It only indicates that the chair is too large and cannot replace the specific size. Wingback chairs also have structures such as high backrests, wings on both sides, armrests, and seat surfaces. They are also large chairs, and the widest position and proportions of each part may be completely different.

Therefore, when judging whether a cover is suitable, one cannot simply refer to the overall height or the name of the furniture. The large armchair slipcover, large wing chair slipcover, and large club chair slipcover all appear to be related to large armchairs, but the backrest profile, armrest connection method, and seat shape are different, and the patterns cannot be directly interchanged.

First, take a clear look at the structure of the chair

Observe the back of the chair before taking measurements. The key to a wingback chair is not just the backrest height, but also the top profile, where the wings extend outward, and how the wings connect to the armrests. When measuring, you need to find the widest point along the actual contour, and you cannot just measure the straight width of the front.

Then check the armrests and seat surface. Record whether the armrests are wide and thick, the length from the front to the backrest, and whether there is a gap between the armrests and the seat surface that can be tucked into the fabric. If the seat cushion can be removed, also make sure it is a box cushion that is close to rectangular or a T-cushion that extends towards the armrest. The two profiles need to be checked for width, depth, and thickness separately.

Finally, check the bottom of the chair. Whether the chair legs are exposed, whether they have skirts, and how much clearance there is at the bottom will affect where the cover covers and whether the fasteners can be used. If the chair has a rocking, rotating, tilting or other movable structure, the fit range cannot be directly determined based on a normal wingback chair.

Which locations should be recorded during measurement

First measure the overall width, depth, and height of the chair. The width should include the distance from the outer armrest to the outer armrest, while also supplementing the width of the highest point of the backrest, the widest part of the backrest, and the bottom width of the backrest. In addition to the overall front-to-back distance, the seat depth should also be recorded; for height, the overall height, seat back height, and armrest height should be distinguished.

The seat surface section records width, depth, and thickness. If the seat cushion is removable, also record its shape and whether it has a zipper or a separate jacket. Record the width, height, and front and rear lengths of the armrests, and pay attention to the corners where the wings, backrest, and armrests connect. Preparing this data is more accurate than comparing large chair slipcovers in general terms.

When measuring, allow the ruler to conform to the outline of the furniture, but do not compress the soft bag before taking a reading. For the wings and the upper edge of the arc, the straight-line distance at the widest point and the length along the contour can be recorded simultaneously, making it easy to compare with the size chart and pattern description of the specific product.

One-piece set or split set

A main cover typically needs to cover the backrest, wings, armrests, and seat surface in sequence, and then stuff excess fabric into the gaps around the seat cushion, armrests, and backrest. If the seat cushion can be removed, the split solution can consist of a main body cover and an independent seat cushion cover. However, “a two-piece set” does not automatically represent two chairs, nor can the coverage be determined solely by the number of pieces.

When confirming the kit, check the number of pieces each of the main body cover, seat cushion cover, cushion cover, or armrest cover, whether they are included in the packaging, and which part of the furniture each piece corresponds to. Fixed and removable seat cushions are installed differently, and attached back cushions cannot be treated directly as loose cushions.

How to reduce displacement during installation

Before installation, confirm the front-to-back orientation of the sleeve. The removable seat cushion and cushion should be removed first, then the main cover should be covered onto the chair, gradually adjusting from a lower position to a higher backrest. Then align the armrests, wings, stitching, and corners to maintain balance on the left and right sides.

Excess fabric can be organized along the gaps between the seat, armrests, and backrest to reduce wrinkles and improve the fit. Elastic bands, Velcro, straps, zippers, or foam fasteners may all be used to maintain position, but not every product will use these structures. Installation should be based on the corresponding product instructions.

Look at the label again before cleaning

Whether the chair cover can be machine washed or needs dry cleaning depends on the specific fabric and care instructions. Removable does not mean machine washable, and being reversible does not mean that both sides have the same fabric, fastening method, and care requirements. When reinstalling after cleaning, the original orientation, stitching, and fixing structure should be reset.

A truly suitable large wingback chair slipcover should correspond to the chair back profile, armrest and seat structure, specific dimensions, and kit composition. Only by recording this information item by item and then comparing it with the product size chart can we reduce the error caused by judging solely by the name of the “large” or chair.
